Beloved Concordia Family,
I hope you are having a GREAT week. I know that this time of year becomes crazy busy. Please keep your heart and mind focused on Jesus when things are hectic. He IS the reason for the season.
Midweek Advent Services
The third of our Midweek Advent Services is coming up tomorrow, December 18, at 7 PM and will feature a Christmas presentation by our Lower Grades day school students, grades Pre-K through 3rd. This is one of the most delightful services of the entire year. The children pour their hearts into sharing the Good News of Jesus’ birth. I know you will be blessed by the presentation. I hope you plan to join us.
Christmas in Reverse
Part 2 of our Christmas sermon series focused on God’s incredible power to “Reverse Ignorance.”
Here are some of the notes from this weekend’s message …
What do you think of when you hear the words Significance and Insignificance?
Sometimes insignificance can surprise us …
- Insignificance – Y2K
- Significance – 9/11
The Christmas story looks so insignificant!
- Insignificant town
- Insignificant parents
- Insignificant place to stay
- Insignificant clothing
- Insignificant cradle
Have YOU ever felt insignificant?
Insignificant witnesses (shepherds)
And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.” (Luke 2:8-14)
Shepherds are insignificant!
Insignificant town – Bethlehem (one of the best-known towns in history!)
Insignificant parents – Mary and Joseph (one of history’s best-known and loved couples)
Insignificant place to stay – the Stable (the cattle shed becomes sacred)
Insignificant clothing – Swaddling Clothes (today, they’d be like the Shroud of Turin)
Insignificant cradle – Manger (most sacred “feeding bowl” in history)
The shepherds … They are used in the MOST significant way!
When they had seen Him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. (Luke 2:17-18)
“amazed” – thaumazo – “marvel”
What made the difference?
- The Baby … Jesus
- Jesus changes everything!
- Jesus came to the insignificant to bring Significance!
“The good news of great joy” Luke 2:10
Have a GREAT week!
Your pastor loves you!
